Evaluation of Site 7

7. http://www.esl-galaxy.com/multimedia.htm SEFL-Access Learning

This website, operated by a group of ESL teachers, is a good place for students to freely learn new vocabulary with videos and also test their grammar and vocabulary, using highly interactive quizzes, built with flash. Teachers can use this page as a lab for their students to practice. There are resources for all levels of ESL students. Note that links may point to another site, but these sites belong to the ESL galaxy. This site is just making access easier for you.

FREE ESL/EFL Teaching Materials & Student Resources are provided, especially
Self-Grading Quizzes: Any good language student soon realizes that s/he cannot acquire all the language in the classroom. Such students always look for materials for learning through a self-access method. This multimedia student lab offers self-grading FLASH QUIZZES & more, for grammar, vocabulary, reading & writing practice.
Interactive Videos: ESL Videos, created from PowerPoint presentations are a never-before-seen method of acquiring vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, reading & spelling. The site has received great comments from students who now use these resources for self-tutoring.

6. http://depts.gallaudet.edu/ESL/ Plain-designed on-line quizzes

This site is part of the Gallaudet University web. It is simply designed to serve Language teaching and leaning. No advertising, no disturbing picture, no unnecessary imformation. These lessons were written by Dr. James L. Madachy, with the aim of helping you learn about English language structures and vocabulary and give you reading practice.

Different forms of exercises and quizzes (including cloze, multiple choice, error correction, vocabulary matches, crossword) are well organized specifically for language students to practice specific language abilities. All have hints unless specified.

5.http://www.esl-lab.com/ offers free audio and video quizzes

Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab is hosted by Randall Davis, whose areas of interest and specialty include CALL, video technology and language teaching, as well as learner autonomy. This site is especially recommended because it is well design for ESL students to practice and test their listening capability, which is quite different from other Sites I have evaluated. It serves as a warehouse to offer Free audio and video quizzes (including related software) for all levels of English learners. It provides

* General Listening Quizzes (Learn everyday conversation with adult and children's voices)
* Listening Quizzes for Academic Purposes (Prepare for TOEFL/TOEIC )
* 20-Minute ESL Vocabulary Lessons (Build vocabulary and pronunciation of key vocabulary)
* Language Learning and Life Tips (Life-skills tips with audio )

All these sources are easily accessible because of the plain and friendly design.

4.http://a4esl.org/q/h/ Self-Study Quizzes for ESL Students

For students for whom English is a Second Language, I also highly recommend the Self-Study Quizzes for ESL Students, a project of The Internet TESL Journal, which has thousands of contributions by many teachers.

That site contains hundreds of quizzes, including Grammar Quizzes, Learn about Places While Answering Grammar Questions, Homonyms, Idioms, Phrasal Verbs & Slang, Scrambled Words, Vocabulary Quizzes, Holidays, Trivia and Misc. Most of them are contributed by ESL teachers (and some students) from all over the globe.

The separate "HTML-only" listing is maintained for those who are using portable devices or computers that cannot use the Flash plugin or do not support JavaScript. It is optimized for Speed & Ease of Use. No Advertising, No Nonessential Images, No Nonsense. With this considerate design, students can easily access the web site, join and enjoy the quizzes.

Evaluation of Site 3

3. http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/quiz_list.htm Interactive quizzes

The web site Guide to Grammar and Writing is sponsored by the Capital Community College Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports scholarships, faculty development, and curriculum innovation. Unless otherwise indicated, all written material on this Web site is the property of Professor Charles Darling and the Capital Community College Foundation and is published here for Free use and for the general online community. It provides numerous quizzes related to English grammar and writing, including VOCABULARY, GENERAL GRAMMAR QUIZZES, BASIC SENTENCE PARTS, STYLISTIC CONSIDERATIONS, etc.

The quizzes, adapted from various sources, can give an overall self-test on different aspects of the English grammar and writing. A clear and directive quiz list makes the students, who are ready to take the test, a clear guidance for specific purpose or area. Students may benefit a lot from the self-testing to polish their English writing and to improve their English proficiency.

2. http://esl.about.com/blquiz.htm Weekly-updated quizzes for ESL/EFL learners

About Inc., a part of The New York Times Company, offers both ESL learners and teachers tons of useful language resources. English tests and quizzes is the place to find online and printable tests and quizzes in grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading for ESL/EFL learners.

Quizzes and tests are prepared for all levels of ESL/EFL learners, from beginner to advanced. IELTS Free Study Resources and TOEFL Quizzes are also available. Interesting enough, this website offers test-taking strategies and helpful guide to understanding "how" to take a test, as knowing English well is not the only thing necessary to do well on a test.

Better yet, this area is continually expanding with new categories and quizzes, as well as other features and things of interest to students and teachers of English, so make sure to visit often.

Evaluation of Site 1

1. http://quizstar.4teachers.org Construct online quizzes that can include multimedia.

QuizStar is powered by 4Teacher.org (University of Kansas), which works to help you integrate technology into your classroom by offering FREE online tools and resources. This site helps teachers locate and create ready-to-use Web lessons, quizzes, rubrics and classroom calendars. There are also tools for student use.

QuizStar is teacher’s online resource to create and manage online quizzes. Thousands of teachers all over the world have registered in the Quizstar. Teacher can create classes so that he can get feedback on student performance, class by class. The class can be private (restricted to certain students) or public (open to anyone). In a private class, teacher can register students or allow them to register after creating the class. Students, who are organized by the classes, will be able to take quizzes and review quiz scores on any computer connected to the Internet. Most importantly, they can take various quizzes without teacher’s surveillance, thus enjoy the pleasure as well as satisfaction from self-testing and self-improvement.

Webography

I am quite interested in Online Language Assessment, the use of Web-based quizzes and activities for classroom testing. Numerous Web sites provide ready-made tests and also offer teachers the capability to custom design their own tests with ease.

With online testing, students access the Internet, go to the site, and take the test. The testing site grades the tests and returns the results. Teachers can view their students' scores, as well as the time it took each student to complete the test.

Any concept that can be tested objectively can be tested online using multiple-choice, true-false, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions. A few sites even allow students to type essays, which are later e-mailed to the teacher for grading. Almost any teacher with Internet access on even a single computer can take advantage of the benefits of online assessment.

The following 7 websites are carefully selected to better illustrate my topic.

In The Road Ahead, Bill Gates gave us a vivid description of the future classroom. Ten years ago, this description might be very foreseeing. In today's classroom, most of his visions have already come true. In my university, network, including Internet and Intranet, serves teaching well. Students and the staff can share all the teaching information and materials at every corner around the campus.
The classroom is undergoing a significant change. In the computer-equipped classroom, student-centered activities are encouraged. Students can access a wealth of information, proceed at their own pace under the guide of teahcers. Teachers remain important but will spend more time giving students guidence, enriching information and teaching materials online, leading discussion and giving feedback to students through network.
Both teachers and students are trained to use certain IT softwares. Multimedia content becomes more and more prevailing in class designs, presentations, and students' assignments. At the same time, this also challenges some aged teachers who feel uneasy to follow the development of IT, as well as some freshmen from rural area.
As for the Digital White Board, mentioned in the book, is a new idea for us. But who knows what will happen in the next ten years?
